Cottage Grove's Sova Among Huskies Earning WCHA Scholar-Athlete Honors

HOUGHTON, MI (02/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Four Michigan Tech hockey players have been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athletes, the league announced recently.

Among them was Daniel Sova from Cottage Grove.

To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his/her cumulative GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

Sova is a second-time Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. The senior defenseman is a 3.52 student in business management. He's appeared in 11 games this season and 107 career contests with four goals and 20 assists.

Also receiving the honors were Brad Stebner, Tanner Kero, and CJ Eick.

Stebner (Fort McMurray, Alb.) , a 4.0 student in biological sciences, is a three-time recipient of the award. The senior defenseman has played in 29 games this season with seven points and owns 5-24=29 in 131 career games. A team co-captain, Stebner has compiled a +10 plus/minus rating over the last six games.

Kero (Hancock, Mich.) garnered WCHA Scholar-Athlete accolades for the second time in his career. The junior assistant captain ranks third on the team in scoring this season with 21 points on 12 goals and nine assists. He's a veteran of 104 career games with 32-29=61. Kero owns a 3.64 GPA in mathematics.

Eick (Appleton, Wisc.) is a first-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete with a 3.56 GPA in sports and fitness management. The sophomore forward has played in all 32 games this season with five goals and 10 assists. His 15 total points rank fifth on the team.

The four Michigan Tech players were counted among the 113 male and female student-athletes honored league-wide. The full release from the conference office is at WCHA.com.
