POTSDAM, NY (03/06/2015)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will welcome an accomplished alumna and a guest artist for a concert on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.
The concert will feature Julie Schumacher Detweiler '95 on clarinet, alongside Michelle Huang on piano. The performance will include works by Claude Debussy, Carlos Guastavino and Robert Muczynski.
This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
About the performers:
Dr. Julie Schumacher Detweiler '95 is a classical freelance clarinetist who has been described as delivering her musical style with "flair." She has performed with orchestras around the country, including the Rochester Philharmonic, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Tallahassee Symphony, the Roanoke Symphony, the Illinois Symphony, the Garden State and the New England Symphonic Ensemble, among others. In addition, Detweiler has participated in the Aspen Music School and Festival, the Rome Festival Orchestra and the Bard Conductor's Institute, as a member of the orchestra.
An avid chamber musician, Detweiler was a founding member of both the Renegade Trio and Sonic Winds woodwind quintet, the latter of which advanced to the semi-finals of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Her most recent chamber music collaborations include performances with Cordancia and the Harlem Chamber Players. As an educator, Detweiler has served as a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist and has taught in the pre-college programs at both the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. In 2011, she was appointed clarinet faculty member for the Affetti Summer Music Festival in Anchorage, Alaska. She has maintained an active private-teaching studio for 17 years.
Detweiler received her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, and earned her Master of Music degree at Northwestern University. She completed her Doctor of Music degree in clarinet performance at Florida State University.
A native of Taiwan, Dr. Michelle Huang has performed widely as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative artist throughout the U.S., as well as in the Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland and Taiwan. She has appeared as guest artist in numerous recitals and has given lectures, workshops and masterclasses, and performs extensively with various chamber ensembles.
Huang was on the faculty of Walter States Community College and Lincoln Memorial University. She has most recently served as assistant professor of piano at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla. She was also on the faculty for summer piano programs at the University of North Florida and Florida State University. A strong advocate of mind and body connection and overall musicians' health, Dr. Huang has conducted numerous performance anxiety workshops. In addition to maintaining an active teaching studio at home, she also teaches at the Greater Richmond School of Music and the Music Tree.
Huang received her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Master of Music degree at the University of Tennessee. She completed her Doctor of Music degree in piano performance at Florida State University.
