Crane School of Music Welcomes Janus Trio for Residency

Violist Beth Meyers, flutist Amanda Baker and harpist Nuiko Wadden will perform at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

POTSDAM, NY (04/11/2013)(readMedia)-- The Crane School of Music will present a guest artist concert featuring Janus, a flute, viola and harp trio, on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

The performance will include works by Professor of Composition Dr. Gregory Wanamaker, as well as Paul Lansky, Claude Debussy and others.

Janus, a Brooklyn-based ensemble, will be in residence at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music on April 22 and 23, where they will read works by student composers, coach student chamber ensembles and discuss current trends in performance.

The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performers:

Comprised of violist Beth Meyers, flutist Amanda Baker and harpist Nuiko Wadden, Janus was formed in 2002 with the goal of presenting and creating new repertoire for flute, viola and harp through commissioning projects and works-in-process collaborations. Named after Janus, the Roman god whose double-faced image peers into the past and future, the trio maintains the established tradition for the instrumentation while breaking new ground into unexplored sonic frontiers. Beginning with Debussy, and including Toru Takemitsu, André Jolivet, Sophia Gubaidulina and Kaija Saariaho, composers have been allured by this intriguing combination of something bowed, something blown and something plucked.

To date, Janus has added over 20 new pieces to the trio library through individual submissions and collaborative projects with universities around the United States. Not limiting themselves only to universities, however, Janus has collaborated with the Aspen Music Festival and School, presenting music activities for over 1,000 children from grade school through high school.

Within New York City, Janus has been featured at halls, including Symphony Space, (le) Poisson Rouge, Joe's Pub, WNYC's Greene Space, The Tank, Roulette, BAM Café, The Stone, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and at the Look and Listen Festival. Other group credits include performances at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Spark Festival in Minneapolis, Bowling Green State University, the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts, the Columbus Art Museum and the Dame Myra Hess Recital Series in Chicago.

Janus is a New Amsterdam Records artist and can be heard on their debut release "I am not." They are also featured on "Gravity and Air," a release from fellow New Amsterdam Records artist, Andrew McKenna Lee.
