"Current Trends in Alzheimer's Research"
ALBANY, NY (09/15/2008)(readMedia)-- The Leon J. Goldberg Foundation is sponsoring the third and last of the live WAMC radio broadcasts in a series highlighting topics related to Alzheimer's disease. The forum, entitled "Current Trends in Alzheimer's Research," will be held at the Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio at 339 Central Avenue in Albany before a live audience on Thursday, September 18th between 1 and 2 p.m.
This forum will discuss emerging trends in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Elizabeth Smith-Boivin, Director of the Anne B. and Leon J. Goldberg Alzheimer's Resource Program of Albany Medical Center says, "This is both an exciting and urgent time for Alzheimer's research. There are many new therapies on the horizon and the threat of an epidemic. Every 71 seconds an American is diagnosed with this disease."
Audience members' questions will be answered by a panel of Capital Region experts. Panelist include moderator Elizabeth Smith-Boivin, the Director of the Anne B. and Leon J. Goldberg Alzheimer's Resource Program of Albany Medical Center, Dr. Earl Zimmerman, Professor of Neurology and Director, Clinical Research, Neurosciences Institute, Albany Medical Center, and Dr. David Henderson from GE Global Research.
"There is not a one of us who hasn't been touched by this disease in one way or another," says WAMC's President Alan Chartock. "As the baby boomer generation ages, getting information about Alzheimer's and dementia out to the public is critical in aiding early detection and treatment efforts. We think this is incredibly important."
The discussions are broadcast live and are archived online at http://www.wamc.org/. Both the station and the Alzheimer's Resource Center are pleased with the favorable response to the previous live broadcasts.
"Alzheimer's disease is one of the most difficult challenges an individual and his/her caregivers will ever face. Fortunately, this radio series provides an opportunity for people to obtain information about the disease as well as state-of-the-art programs available to help," says Elizabeth Smith-Boivin.
The public is invited to attend and be a part of our live studio audience. Admission is free and reservations are requested. To register or for questions, please call 518-262-0800.
