+ PA Williams, DSS Commissioner Gary Jenkins, and more electeds

NEW YORK, NY (07/30/2022) (readMedia)-- Tonight, Da Homeless Hero aka Shams DaBaron, directly impacted New Yorkers, Mayor Eric L. Adams, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Department of Social Services (DSS) Commissioner Gary Jenkins, advocates, and more will sleep on the outside of Morningside Park – a place where Shams once slept – to raise awareness about street homelessness. They will also hold a vigil for the 13,000 people who die while homeless each year in the United States at 7:30pm on Saturday.

Register here.

July is Homeless Rights Month and began one year ago with a call from Shams and advocate Maria Theresa to unite advocates across the city to counter the then Mayor Bill de Blasio's assaults on homeless rights. Currently, half a million people are homeless in the United States – more than 25% of them are street homeless. Over 60,000 New Yorkers are still languishing in shelters, and thousands more are living on the streets.

With the support of the current Mayor Eric Adams and his administration, Shams DaBaron and Impacted Advocates have been given a seat at the table to help change the decades of failed policies. Closing out this event with a Sleep Out is a great way to show that we are with our unhoused neighbors and we will not leave them to remain in the streets.
