SPRINGFIELD, MA (06/15/2010)(readMedia)-- Dane R. Mealey of Avon, CT, received the Wellen G. Davison Award during Baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England College. The award is presented to the student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in the Mechanical Engineering laboratory. This year, Mealey shared the honor with Kyle R. Snyder.
"Over the course of these past two semesters, Dane and Kyle have demonstrated a particular affinity for experimentation along with the requisite analytical abilities that need to accompany good laboratory skills," said professor of mechanical engineering Carl Rathmann in presenting the award. "These two show that intellectual skills should go along with a willingness to get your fingernails dirty."
For their senior project, Mealey and Snyder jointly developed an instrumented "tow tank," which Rathmann described as a fundamental piece of equipment for fluid mechanics labs. The equipment will be utilized by future Western New England College students to understand the drag forces on bodies travelling through fluids.
Mealey graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta and Sigma Beta Tau honor societies.
