David Vielma of Fort Wayne wins Kappa Kappa Kappa State Scholarship

HUNTINGTON, IN (05/28/2013)(readMedia)-- David Vielma, from Fort Wayne, Ind., and a student in Huntington University's Professional Programs, has been awarded a $1,000 Kappa, Kappa, Kappa Scholarship. Vielma was one of two students in the state of Indiana selected for the award.

Thirteen years after high school graduation, in the fall of 2012, Vielma began his academic career at Huntington. He plans to graduate with a degree in non-for-profit leadership and organizational management in 2016. He currently works part time as an associate pastor for New Covenant Worship Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Before enrolling at HU, Vielma received training in youth development through the DeVoss Urban Initiative for City-life USA provided by Youth for Christ. He spent eight years there working as an operations manager.

Director Shelly Francka said she is proud of Vielma as a scholarship recipient and as a model for future students.

"Prioritizing work, family and community service can be difficult, especially when you add the pursuit of higher education with the equation," she said. "However, David has demonstrated that with hard work, continued prayer, commitment toward achieving academic success and effective time management, adult students can achieve their educational goals."

The Tri Kappa selection committee bases the criteria for this scholarship on having strong goals, work experience and volunteer service since high school. The scholarships are directed to students who have no previous degree beyond high school and have a lapse in their education for at least five years. Students who are enrolled in an accredited school offering an associate or baccalaureate degree and have completed at least one semester may apply for the scholarship.
