ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (03/19/2012)(readMedia)-- Rachel Waldron, Decatur, Georgia native and senior at St. Mary's College of Maryland, was presented with the 2012 Portz Award for the Outstanding Maryland Honors Student. The award is given to two students, one from a two-year school and one from a four-year school, every year by the Maryland Collegiate Honors Council. The winner is selected based on grade point average, initiative and leadership, and academic excellence.
Waldron is majoring in history and international languages and cultures at St. Mary's, which has produced three of the last four Portz Award members. She is also a member of the school's Nitze Honors Program.
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
