GRANVILLE, OH (04/21/2014)(readMedia)-- GRANVILLE, Ohio-The Louis Kussmaul Friendship Award, presented to Denison University students who have contributed most to the friendly relations between Granville and the college, has been awarded to Denison senior Rose Schrott. A double major in English literature and black studies who hails from Pittsburgh, Pa., Schrott was presented her award at the Kussmaul Award Luncheon held on Wednesday, April 16, at Denison.
Laurel Kennedy, Denison University vice president for student development, and Trish Newcomb, executive director of the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, presented Schrott with the award certificate and a check for $300. Schrott's parents were present at the awards ceremony.
Schrott was nominated for the prestigious award by Jesse Yeager, a member of the Denison class of 2010 and an assistant director of admissions at Denison. In her letter of nomination, Yeager wrote, "In her role as a YoungLife Licking County leader, Rose has spent hundreds of hours selflessly serving the students in the Granville High School community. YoungLife, a nondenominational Christian outreach ministry, focuses on sharing the Gospel with, and mentoring to, high school students. For all four years of her time at Denison, Rose has shared her life with the students at Granville HS as both an assistant coach for the track team, and a life coach through leading weekly Bible studies, meeting for coffee, and hanging out with them after school, at school dances, and football games."
Additionally, Schrott serves as a mentor through the Newark chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. On campus, she is a student-staff writer for both TheDen and the Denison Magazine and currently holds an intern position with the magazine. Maureen Harmon, editor of Denison magazine, said, "Quite simply, Rose rocks!"
In presenting the Kussmaul award to Schrott, Kennedy said, "Rose, you've created lasting friendships through your dedication and commitment to the Granville High School students and through your leadership in YoungLife Licking County. Please accept our admiration, gratitude, and the Kussmaul Award from the Denison University and the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce."
