Des Moines Cook Claims Win In State Fair Maiden Voyage

DES MOINES, IA (08/13/2019) (readMedia)-- First time food competition entrants put their best creations to the test in the Beginner's Contest, judged Saturday, August 10, at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

Karla Walsh of Des Moines won First Place Overall and a $30 cash award.

Holly Boyd of Ames earned Second Place Overall and Grace Graham of Carlisle claimed third place.

Entries were judged on taste and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 166 divisions, 715 classes and over 7,300 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
