Des Moines – A 1969 graduate of Des Moines University was recently honored by the school's global health department. Nirmalendu (Niru) K. Pandeya, D.O., M.S., was chosen as the 2009 recipient of the Global Health Outreach award.
The Global Health Outreach award was created in 2008 to recognize contributions from community physicians for their work on Des Moines University's global health initiative. The global health program gives students, faculty, alumni and others a great opportunity to gain real-world experience in international medicine.
"Dr. Pandeya has been a tireless ambassador for Des Moines University (DMU) and was chosen particularly for his work initiating and mentoring students for international rotation sites in India," explained Yogesh Shah, M.D., associate dean of global health at DMU. "He has been instrumental in assisting the global health department with creating sites in his home country of India. He just recently made the trip to India to meet with hospital administrators and represented DMU in key sites."
Now retired from his work in plastic surgery, Dr. Pandeya lives in West Des Moines, Iowa and enjoys his recent appointment as adjunct clinical associate professor of global medicine at DMU. As a military physician he obtained the rank ofbrigadier general and commander of 132 TAC hospital in the United States Air Force and Iowa Air National Guard. He is also a Fellow in the following organizations: The American Academy of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the International College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Association of Surgeons of India.
