BATAVIA, NY (04/19/2012)(readMedia)-- Batavia High School senior Ryan DiMartino has committed to playing baseball at Genesee Community College beginning in the fall.
DiMartino is currently in his senior season at BHS under head coach Rick Saunders. He has been a part of the varsity program since his sophomore year and has also participated in a number of travel and summer leagues in the area.
"Next year should be one of the best, maybe even the best, teams that I have ever coached," Cougars head coach Skip Sherman said. "One of our focuses for next year is solid pitching and pitching depth, and we believe Ryan will give us that."
DiMartino was recruited by six other colleges to play baseball, but decided on GCC.
"I chose GCC because it is a great SUNY school to start my college education and I liked the baseball program. I also wanted to play a higher division of competitive ball," DiMartino said.
He becomes one of the latest Batavia High players to join the GCC baseball program, following some recent BHS graduates such as Ryan Gugel ('05) and Chris Page ('07).
"We've had a lot of good local players in my time and it's nice to continue to have some of the best local players in our program. It's an opportunity to play with talented kids from all over the world. It puts them on a bigger stage, makes them better and opens up more opportunities," said Sherman.
DiMartino, a pitcher and an infielder, will have an opportunity to earn a spot in the starting rotation as well as in the field.
"I know he is a versatile player. If he can prove at this level that he can play multiple positions, he will have that opportunity," Sherman said.
