Doro Wat Returns to Aiken to Present Tasty Repertoire of Jazz

Traditional New Orleans Jazz Band to Perform at Etherredge Center

AIKEN, SC (11/01/2018) The Doro Wat Jazz Band makes a repeat performance in the University of South Carolina Aiken Etherredge Center on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. This show is part of the 2018-2019 Cultural Series and is sponsored by Jet Pilot Services.

"Aikenites who saw Doro Wat perform for the first time in Aiken, may be delighted to hear of their return this December," said Michael St. John, box office manager at the Etherredge Center.

"For those who missed them, you definitely have something to look forward to. Doro Wat is a 'hard driving traditional jazz band' with a heavy emphasis on horn-improvisation."

The Doro Wat Jazz Band is comprised of selected musicians who are leading talents in their respective instrument for traditional Jazz and improvisation. The goal of the group is to "continue to keep traditional jazz alive for many years to come," according to band leader, Ben Polcer.

The band draws influences from jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, to Fats Waller, and Benny Moten. Among the great influences Ben Polcer credits is his father, Ed Polcer, who performed at Eddie Condon's in New York City. Polcer recalls as a child, hearing some of the best traditional jazz players in the country playing with his father in the Big Apple.

Doro Wat, named for the Ethiopian stew, is a traditional style jazz band. This style is often called New Orleans Jazz, and it is one of the first styles of jazz to come about in the 1920's and 1930s.

Like the stew, Doro Wat promises to share a tasty selection of jazz improvisation, from musicians that are the "absolute top of their field."
