Douglas Haase of Apple Valley featured in St. Olaf College news story

NORTHFIELD, MN (08/02/2012)(readMedia)-- St. Olaf student Douglas Haase '13 is using a grant from the American Society of Hematology (ASH) to perform research this summer at the University of Minnesota's Masonic Cancer Center.

Haase was one of 44 recipients of the ASH Trainee Research Award, which comes with a $4,000 stipend to study blood and blood-related diseases. The award also includes $1,000 to travel to the 54th ASH Annual Meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, the premier annual education and scientific meeting in the field of hematology.

Just 10 undergraduate students from across the country received the award - the other recipients are medical students and residents.

Haase, a chemistry major who plans to pursue a career in medicine, is working with University of Minnesota faculty member Michael Verneris, a medical doctor who specializes in pediatric hematology-oncology and bone marrow transplants. Their cancer research examines gene deletions on natural killer cells and the reactivation of cytolomegalovirus after bone marrow transplants.

Haase is the son of Gregory Haase and Bridget Ahmann of Apply Valley.
