Dr. Khawar Presents at International Economics Conference

ELMIRA, NY (10/31/2018) Dr. Mariam Khawar, professor of economics, recently presented her paper, "The story behind the economics: Providing context by using story-telling to illustrate economic theory," on mathematical modeling at the 86th International Atlantic Economic Conference. Khawar's paper examines recent criticisms by economists about the excessive focus on mathematical modelling in regards to the exclusion of other considerations within in the discipline.

According to Khawar, her paper "advocates for a broader, interdisciplinary approach to both economic theory and economic policy making." Khawar also examines how to make the work of economists more accessible to outsiders not trained in the discipline's methodology. She claims that one way to model this is to introduce students to the broader contexts in which economic activities take place with the use of both fictional and non-fictional narratives. The paper discusses two examples of narratives that can be used to supplement students' understanding of complex models of international trade theory.
