WESTMINSTER, MD (11/06/2012)(readMedia)-- Dr. Lisa Taneyhill of Kensington, Md., has received the alumni professional achievement award from McDaniel College. She is a 1995 alumna of Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College.

Presented annually during McDaniel's Homecoming, the alumni professional achievement award is given to a graduate who has gained distinction in his/her chosen field or profession and whose accomplishments reflect admirably on McDaniel College.

Taneyhill earned a dual degree in chemistry and biochemistry from Western Maryland College, and served as a research intern at the Molecular Aspects of Drug Design Laboratory at the National Cancer Institute-Frederick Cancer Research at Ft. Detrick, Md. Her work there resulted in three peer-reviewed publications and launched her into a career in research and teaching.

Currently, she is an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. Since 2007, she has successfully competed for grants totaling over $1.3 million including funding from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. In 2011, she was named the outstanding faculty educator in the University's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

She earned both a master's degree and Ph.D. in molecular biology from Princeton University. At Princeton, she published four peer-reviewed research articles and received several awards including the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research Award for Scientific Excellence.

She then went on to complete two postdoctoral fellowships at the California Institute of Technology. Her research there was funded by a National Institutes of Health Service Award, the meritorious National Institutes of Health Pathway to Independence Award and the Elsevier Scholars Program Women in Science Award.
