PHILADELPHIA, PA (04/13/2011)(readMedia)-- Harrisburg resident Kevin Knehr, a Drexel University junior majoring in mechanical engineering, has been named a recipient of the 2011-12 Goldwater Scholarship. The award, named for Senator Barry M. Goldwater, was created to foster and encourage students to pursue careers in fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.
Knehr was one of three Drexel University Pennion Honors College students that received the prestigious Goldwater scholarship. His ambition is to conduct research in renewable energy storage systems to improve the efficiency and cost of renewable energy. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering.
The Goldwater Scholars were selected on a basis of academic merit from 1,095 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated. Of the 1,095 students nominated only 275 scholarships were awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors for the 2011-12 academic year. The one and two year scholarships will cover student's tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7, 500 per year.
