ECU student Kamryn Akers-Stout is Business Scholar

ADA, OK (01/08/2019) Kamryn Akers-Stout entered East Central University two years ago as part of the Freshman Scholars Program. Now the Stratford resident and Pauls Valley High School graduate is part of the exclusive ECU Business Scholars for 2018-19.

The Business Scholars Program not only welcomes students for their academic achievements but also their ability to show leadership skills in a manner of being an extension of the university's faculty through the Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business.

Akers-Stout works on campus in the ECU Office of Academic Affairs.

"I have been able to handle myself in a professional manner thanks to the things I've learned through the school of business," said Akers-Stout. "I also learned that it's more than just being successful and making it big. I learned that it is important to give back and help the next ones in line. So I have been volunteering with my classmates around Ada and campus to apply this to my life."

Students must have at least a 3.50 grade-point average before entering the program and must maintain at least a 3.25 each semester to remain in the program. They must also be active in the Business Leaders Association by attending meetings and holding positions of responsibility.

Besides being on campus for two or more years, the business scholars must be able to volunteer for special projects in the School of Business, participate in the Dean's Leadership Council, be willing to travel during assigned trips and, once they graduate, give back to the program after graduation as Alumni of Business Scholars.

Professionalism such as dress, actions and speech is something that is stressed and something that Akers-Stout has grasped and taken to heart.

"It has made such a difference already with the few small tips and tricks I have learned," Akers-Stout said. "I feel more confident in the way I present myself and more prepared to take on life after college in the business world."

Akers-Stout is still exploring work options for after graduation and has been looking toward the human resources management field as well as returning to work on campus.

"I love working in the president's office and I have recently started to consider working around here," said Akers-Stout. "I am a very emotionally-centered person and I like to help people, so I want to be where I can do that."

Other honors for Akers-Stout include being part of the Presidential Leadership Class VII, president's honor roll three times and dean's honor roll once. She also earned a Business Professionals of America Torch Award for service at the state level and a runner-up fundamental word processing skills award.
