ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (01/23/2016)(readMedia)-- A variety of talks this winter at the
Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown Collegeexplore a 1762 German hymnal, Amish attitudes about vaccinations in one community and the biblical story of Jacob.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, linguist and hymnologist Hedda Durnbaugh discusses what makes the Schwenkfelder hymnal unique. In her lecture, "The Schwenkfelder Hymnal of 1762 and Its Unique Place in German Hymnody" she outlines its history and analyzes the origins of its hymn texts.
Christine Nelson-Tuttle, associate professor of nursing at St. John Fisher College, discusses "Assessing Vaccination Receptivity in the Old Order Amish in Cattaraugus County, N.Y." at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23. Her research covers receptiveness of Amish individuals to vaccinations, where they obtain information and who assists them in making decisions about getting vaccinated.
"Gender, Shame and Jacob's Hip: One Communal Society's Views" are subjects of a talk by Jeff Bach, Young Center director and religious studies professor at Elizabethtown College. He discusses the Ephrata Community's unique interpretation of the biblical story of Jacob that allowed it to criticize patriarchy and male domination at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15.
