Lebanon Valley College's Jazz Band and Small Jazz Ensemble announced their fall performance dates.

ANNVILLE, PA (10/24/2016)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College's Small Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall in the Bertha Brossman Blair Music Center. Additionally, one week later, on Friday, Nov. 18, the College's Jazz Band will perform its concert at 7:30 p.m., also in Lutz Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Small Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Timothy Wolfe '07, adjunct assistant professor of music, is studying the traditional Great American Songbook of vocal jazz, as done by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. The group rehearses once a week, and allows students the chance to study the rich and vast tradition of jazz combo playing and the large library of standard repertoire.

This is done not only through rehearsing and learning material for their concerts-which occur each semester-but also through listening to great jazz recordings and encouraging students to seek out and play with professional musicians off campus. One of the objectives of the group is to introduce students to the expectations of freelance pick-up gigs.

The College's Jazz Band features 33 student musicians this semester under the direction of Tom Strohman '75, professor emeritus of music. The band will perform a variety of jazz styles at this concert, from the traditional sounds of swing to the rhythmic excitement of Latin and jazz fusion, including selections composed by Lerner and Loewe, the Beatles, Bronislau Kaper, Jeff Jarvis, Bob Lowden, and Jerome Kern. Numerous students will be featured as instrumental and vocal soloists throughout the concert.

The LVC Jazz Band was first organized in 1960 under the auspices of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a professional fraternity for men in music. The formative years were spent on campus performing for school functions and serving as an outlet for the musician who enjoyed playing jazz. Since 1961, the campus concerts have become one of the most important school functions. Many top jazz artists have performed with the band, including LVC alumnus Walt Levinsky '51, Jerome Richardson, Bill Watrous, Cecil Bridgewater, Bobby Christian, Bobby Rosengarden, Marvin Stamm, Urbie Green, Arnie Lawrence, Tommy Newsome, Harold Danko, and Roland Vasquez.

Lebanon Valley College's Music Department offers a variety of public performances by students, faculty, or guest visitors each semester. Please visit www.lvc.edu/music/events.aspx for additional information regarding upcoming events.
