LOCK HAVEN, PA (05/07/2012)(readMedia)-- Eric Driscoll has been accepted to the University of Southern California (USC) Los Angeles, California, to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry.
He will be graduating May 12, 2012 from Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pa., with a B.S. in Chemistry, an A.S. in Applied Science, and a minor in math.
Eric completed the program in Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology at Penn State University Park, Pa. in the summer of 2010. Nanotechnology is the study of science on the nanometer scale, and can encompass anything from microelectronics to medicine.
While at Lock Haven Unviersity, Eric has been a four year Dean's List student, and a member of the University Global Honors Program. He is a four year recipient of the Alfred E. Hoberman chemistry scholarship from LHU and also winner of the Principles of Chemistry award. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Samuel and Rose Kleinman Memorial Scholarship. This year, he serves as president of the Chemistry club.
His research has been under the direction of Dr. Marian Tzolov, an associate professor in Physics. In 2011 he gave a poster presentation at the American Physical Society's national meeting in Dallas, TX. It was entitled, "Modification of the growth mechanism of zinc oxide nanowires by addition of oxidizing agents." Results from this work are currently being prepared in a manuscript for publication.
A member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, he was first place award winner at the spring student symposium in 2011, for his presentation on zinc oxide nanowires.
Last summer, he was the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Scholarship. He was accepted to Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif. There, he worked with Dr. Hal Van Ryswyk on dye sensitized solar cell research.
Eric's abstract for an oral presentation was accepted for the March 2012 American Physical Society meeting in Boston, Mass. Shortly after, he headed to San Diego, CA where he did a poster presentation at the March 2012 American Chemical Society meeting.
Eric is a 2008 North Pocono High School graduate, and an Eagle Scout from BSA Troop 132, Springbrook, PA. He is the son of William and Grace Driscoll, Roaring Brook Twp. Pa.
