ABILENE, TX (05/16/2012)(readMedia)-- Erin James-Brown of Garland, Texas, was awards the Hemphill Graduate Honor Award as a part of commencement exercises at Hardin-Simmons University on May 12, 2012. James-Brown received her Master of Divinity degree.

The Hemphill Graduate Honor Award is presented by the HSU graduate school to recognize the student who excels in academic studies, possesses character and behavior consistent with the university's purpose, and exhibits potential for significant contribution to his or her chosen field.

The award was endowed by Dr. Lee Hemphill and Mrs. Lunelle Nix Hemphill. Dr. Hemphill served Hardin-Simmons for many years as vice president of development. The award is presented each year at the May commencement and includes a plaque and cash award.

James-Brown demonstrated a keen intellect and a focused curiosity. In recognition of excellent academic ability, she has been awarded the national Cooperative Baptist Fellowship scholarship for the past two years. She is a published author of two book reviews and performed editorial work for the well-respected theological journal, Review and Expositor.

James-Brown received the T.B. Maston Scholar of Christian Ethics Award in 2008 and the Sheri Moody Christian Service Award in 2007. She was also selected for the Addie Davis Award in preaching, a national award presented by the Baptist Women in Ministry.

She serves as the Teaching Pastor at Crosspoint Church in Abilene, and has been the featured preacher at Logsdon Chapel, ACU Graduate Chapel, at several local churches, and most recently at Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo during the Martha Sterns Marshall Preaching Month for Women in Ministry. She was a graduate assistant for Logsdon Seminary from fall 2009 through this spring. She provided volunteer visitations at Sears Methodist Retirement Systems and participated in the healthcare ministry class which Logsdon offers through Hendrick Medical Center.

The award recipient received her Master of Divinity on May 12, 2012, and has been selected for a residency in clinical pastoral education with Harris Methodist Hospital System in Fort Worth beginning this summer.

She is the daughter of Paul James and Lynne James, and has been selected for a residency in clinical pastoral education with Harris Methodist Hospital System in Fort Worth beginning this summer.
