CHESTERTOWN, MD (06/10/2013)(readMedia)-- Washington College is pleased to announce that Eshan Patel '13 of Linthicum, MD, is 2012-13 the recipient of the Gold Pentagon Award, the Department of Biology Research Award and the Clark-Porter Medal. The Gold Pentagon recipient is selected by Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society for outstanding service to the College. The Research Award recognizes "the graduating biology major who has demonstrated excellence in academics and undergraduate biological research." The Clark-Porter Medal is awarded to "the student whose character and personal integrity, in the opinion of the faculty, have most clearly enhanced the quality of campus life."
Patel graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biology and psychology at Washington College's 230th commencement ceremony this May. On campus, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Sigma Xi scientific honor society, as well as president of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, president of Health Occupations Students of America and a committee member and team captain for Relay for Life. Patel also served as a resident assistant, peer tutor and member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Colleges Against Cancer.
Patel was selected by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) to receive a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) traineeship. He will be investigating international molecular-based HIV epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health under the mentorship of Thomas Quinn, MD, MSc, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health and chief of the International HIV/STD Section at NIAID. Patel plans to attend medical school after completing his fellowship.
