Essex Junction Native Mary Kulhowvick Receives Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Indonesia
VILLANOVA, PA (06/29/2011)(readMedia)-- Mary Kulhowvick, an Essex Junction native and 2011 Villanova University graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Indonesia for the 2011-2012 academic year. Kulhowvick will teach English to high school students in Indonesia and hopes to learn about gender roles and cultural norms while working to empower disadvantaged women.
An English and education major at Villanova, Kulhowvick mentored high school students and shared her experiences with prospective students and families as an admissions ambassador. During her study abroad semester in London, she provided women refugees with resources and critical job skills while volunteering at Baytree Centre.
After Kulhowvick's Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship ends, she plans to teach high school English at inner city schools and pursue a Masters degree in education.
Since 1993, more than 965 Villanova University students have applied for national fellowships. Of those, 274 advanced to finalist status while 159 received awards.
