ROCK ISLAND, IL (09/03/2010)(readMedia)-- Erin Christian, a senior from Aurora, Ill., majoring in music and mathematics, is the 2010-11 recipient of the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award. The scholarship, named for music teacher and publisher Theodore Presser, is awarded to an outstanding music major each year at accredited universities and colleges, such as Augustana.

Christian sings with the Augustana Choir and Chamber Singers and participates in Opera@Augustana. "I love the diversity of the music department," said Christian. "In Augustana Choir, the choir I've been in all four years, we are made up of less than one-third music majors. I think that says a lot about the quality of the program. We have so many people that love music, and Augustana makes it possible for students to participate in not one, but many activities."

Christian has fond memories of traveling to Scandinavia with the Augustana Choir, singing at the annual Lessons and Carols concert in Ascension Chapel, and playing the lead role in the opera "Sister Angelica." She also has enjoyed learning from her professors, within and outside the music department. "Augustana has made me well-versed in multiple areas of study," she added. "I don't know any other school that does that so well."

Dr. Jon Hurty, music professor and director of the Augustana Choir and Chamber Singers, praises Christian for her commitment to music and her studies. "While we have many dedicated and successful students in the music program, Erin is a very wonderful performer, dedicated musician, highly motivated scholar and a leader in the department," said Hurty.

In addition to her music activities, Christian is an active member of the Phi Rho sorority, in which she currently serves as president. After graduation, she hopes to become an actuary, as well as teach voice lessons and participate in opera productions. Dr. Sangeetha Rayapati, assistant professor of voice and Christian's academic advisor, calls her "the ultimate well-rounded musician."

The Presser Foundation was established through the generosity of Theodore Presser, who overcame financial struggles to pursue a career in music education. In 1883, at the age of 35, he created the music magazine "The Etude," which quickly grew in popularity and established Presser as a musical publisher. However, Presser did not forget his humble beginnings and established the Presser Foundation to assist other musicians. For more information on the Presser Foundation, visit presserfoundation.org.
