ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (04/08/2014)(readMedia)-- For the first time in its 24-year history, FLARE: The Flagler Review has published an online-only edition.

FLARE, the literary magazine of Flagler College, has a print edition that it produces in the fall. But this spring the publication decided to explore online publishing as a way to stay connected with readers and engage new audiences.

"This semester has been a big experiment for all of us on staff," said FLARE Editor Laura Henning, who is also an English major at Flagler. "But the online edition has been very successful. We've seen record Web traffic for the site all year, and we've had more than 1,800 visits since the online edition went live in late March."

FLARE, which is produced by students as part of an English department class at Flagler, will return in the fall with a new print and online edition. But editors plan to continue improving online offerings including blogs, author interviews and regular fiction, poetry and nonfiction postings throughout the year.

FLARE seeks to publish both up-and-coming and established writers, and includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction and art. FLARE will also publish a Flagler student online edition in late April.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college located in St. Augustine, Fla. The college offers 29 majors, 34 minors and two pre-professional programs, the largest majors being business, education and communication. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil. The Ponce has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For more on Flagler College, visit www.flagler.edu.
