FSU Awards Senior Daniel Weir With Beall Fellowship

FROSTBURG, MD (04/07/2014)(readMedia)-- The J. Glenn Beall, Jr., Public Affairs Institute at Frostburg State University has awarded senior Daniel Weir of Hagerstown, Md., with one of two Beall Fellowships. The fellowship includes a $1,000 assistance stipend to develop programming at the University to help foster an understanding of the importance of public service. Among his duties was to organize a symposium featuring Frostburg alumni who have held prominent public service positions.

Weir graduated from North Hagerstown High School and serves on the President's Leadership Circle.

In previous years, the Institute has sponsored programs on public service and leadership and has hosted a variety of speakers at the University including U.S. Rep. Beverly Byron, U.S. Rep. Bill Goodling, Maryland Senate President Mike Miller and U.S. Sens. Paul Sarbanes and Ben Cardin. The institute also sponsors a congressional election debate and supports students serving in a variety of internship positions.

In the fall semester, Cardin and U.S. Rep. John Delaney provided FSU students opportunities to serve on Capitol Hill. Students also served in Sarbanes' and U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett's office when they served in Congress. This semester, seniors Tyler Young and Chris Lokey are interning in Annapolis with Md. Sen. George Edwards and Del. Wendell Bietzel, respectively.
