FYI: NEW NATIONAL GRID RATE HIKES GOING INTO EFFECT IN BROOKLYN, LONG ISLAND COMING APRIL 1

NY HEAT Act would save families who need it most an average of $136 every month and curb utility rate hikes happening across NYS

BROOKLYN, NY (03/17/2025) (readMedia)-- Despite already charging the average household $30 more per month on their energy bills since 2023, National Grid will again raise rates on customers in Long Island and Brooklyn beginning April 1st. Spring Street Climate Fund and the Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE) are available to provide resources and comment on any stories related to the rate increase.

According to a recent analysis from AGREE, the average cost of heating for NYC National Grid customers has increased from $110 in 2023 to over $150 in 2025 while the average cost of heating for Long Island customers has increased from $105 to $147. National Grid's latest rate hike will be followed by another increase in 2026 - meaning the average monthly energy bill is expected to reach $172 for NYC customers and $166 for Long Island customers by 2026!

The rate hike comes as the Legislature considers the NY HEAT Act, which would lower energy bills and curb future rate hikes affecting families across the state. Last week, the Senate included the full bill in their one-house budget but the Assembly failed to include the bill for the third straight year. The NY HEAT Act would directly address rate hikes happening across the state and save nearly 1 in 4 households an average of $142 each month in NYC and $164 in Long Island - cutting their bills in half. The bill would also avoid major gas pipeline expansion costs which lead to continuing rate hikes on all customers.
