Facebook Beats Google in US Web Traffic

BOSTON, MA (03/18/2010)(readMedia)-- According to a recent report, Facebook overtook Google in US web traffic last week. The report, created by the research firm Hitwise, states that the two sites accounted for 14 per cent of all US internet visits last week with Facebook's home page recording 7.07 per cent of traffic and Google's home page 7.03 per cent.

Social media marketing agency 451 Marketing Partner A.J. Gerritson commented on the report, "I believe that this is an indicator of how the web is changing. More people are using the web for social activities and social computing. With three out of four Americans using some type of social technology, I am not surprised at this report's findings; It was only a matter of time."

In another recent report conducted by the research firm Nielsen, the results indicated internet users worldwide spent over five and a half hours per month on social networking websites during December 2009, an 82 per cent increase from December 2008.

"Social networking sites are becoming very important social search engines because people are spending a significant amount of time on these sites. Currently, YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web. People look to their friends and colleagues for information, products and services," stated Gerritson.
