DECORAH, IA (02/06/2013)(readMedia)--  DECORAH, Iowa- Jonathon Struve, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a baritone recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.

Struve will be joined by Jessica Paul, professor of music, on piano.

The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, will feature "Liederkreis, op. 39" by Robert Schumann and song from German cabarets and film by Friedrich Hollaender.

Schumann's "Liederkreis" features the poetry of Josef Freiherr von Eichendorff. Written during Schumann's "Liederjahr" in 1840, Schumann's setting is full of romantic pathos with sensitive musical settings of Eichendorff's melancholic poetry.

Hollaender's music and texts offer insight into popular culture and the political and social turmoil facing the fledgling German democracy in this time period through a critical and satirical lens.

Struve, doctoral candidate in vocal literature at the University of Iowa, holds a master's degree in vocal performance from Northwestern University and a bachelor's in music from Luther.

He is a specialist in German and English art song and presented a lecture recital on Arthur Somervell's song cycle "A Shropshire Lad" at the College Music Society's regional conference. Struve has also presented at conferences at Indiana University and Hawaii University on the music of Friedrich Hollaender.
