Family Homelessness Coalition Commends NYS Leg's Commitment to Housing
Housing advocates push for Governor to make housing voucher program permanent and implement additional services
ALBANY, NY (04/29/2025) (readMedia)-- Today, Governor Hochul announced $50 million in funding to launch the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP), a statewide rental subsidy program for low-income families and individuals who are currently homeless, or facing eviction, domestic violence, and hazardous living conditions. As of 2024, more than 158,000 New Yorkers are experiencing homelessness, up more than 50% in just one year.
The Family Homelessness Coalition issued the following statement in response:
"We commend Governor Hochul, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Speaker Heastie for their leadership and commitment to supporting families without homes. Behind each voucher is a mother finally safe from domestic violence, a child safely sleeping through the night, or a family rebuilding stability after years of uncertainty. This new funding is a matter of security for families – but it's just a start. There must be a sustained multi-year effort to keep families in their homes. We hope the Legislature will vote yes on a budget that includes this key funding, and continues to fight for those who need it."
