Family Homelessness Coalition: "NYC's Next Mayor Must Work to End Family Homelessness"

NEW YORK, NY (06/26/2025) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, Democratic mayoral candidate and Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani secured the party's nomination with a campaign that put affordability and housing stability front and center. At a time when more than 130,000 New Yorkers are experiencing homelessness around our city and millions of renters face looming rent hikes, families across the five boroughs are demanding bold and decisive leadership.

The Family Homelessness Coalition issued the following statement in response:

"We congratulate Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for leading a successful mayoral campaign that resonated with so many New Yorkers. As voters look ahead to the general election, families are seeking a leader who will treat housing as a human right. Right now, our city does not have enough shelter beds for every person in need - and proposals to raise rents for formerly homeless CityFHEPS recipients and rent-stabilized tenants only deepen the risk of displacement. New Yorkers deserve a mayor who will stand with them and guarantee housing opportunity. Our next mayor must prioritize real affordability, invest in permanent housing solutions, and adopt the policies necessary to end family homelessness once and for all."

About the Family Homelessness Coalition: The Family Homelessness Coalition is comprised of formerly homeless mothers and 20 organizations representing service and housing providers and children's advocacy organizations united by the goal of launching a coordinated, collaborative, multi-agency effort focused on preventing family homelessness, improving the well-being of children and families in shelters, and supporting the long-term stability of families with children who leave shelter.
