Five Local Students Recognized With Frostburg State University Honors

FROSTBURG, MD (06/01/2011)(readMedia)-- Five local students were among the graduate and undergraduate students recognized at Frostburg State University's Honors Convocation in May.

Mia Michelle Hornbaker of Hancock, who received graduate program honors in counseling psychology, has contributed much beyond academics, according to her professors. Her work in providing supervision to advanced undergraduates and fellow graduate students (in classroom role-plays) and her engagement and feedback in extensive out-of-class role-plays have had a powerful, positive effect on students' growth, as has her support and advice to many students. A graduate of Hancock Middle/Senior High School, she is the daughter of Mark and Sharon Hornbaker.

Jennifer Alyse Nalley of Smithsburg, who received honors in general education in elementary education, was the secretary for the Frostburg Student Education Association for three years. She is also a graduate of the Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership. Nalley plans to become a fifth-grade or middle school math and language arts teacher. A graduate of Smithsburg High School, she is the daughter of Terry and Barbara Nalley.

Laura Catharyn Scuffins of Hagerstown, who received graduate program honors in teaching – secondary/P-12, delivers well-planned, effective, creative and dynamic lessons to her students. She states, "My goal is not to change every student's life in some grand fashion; my goal is to simply teach students how to think for themselves." Scuffins considers the abilities, learning styles and interests of her students in her lessons and goes beyond expectations by helping with English extended-learning tutoring and diligently communicating with parents. She has a passion for teaching and a love of her subject matter, her faculty members say. A graduate of Williamsport High School, she is the daughter of Galen and Catherine Scuffins.

Rebecca Tara Slate of Hagerstown, who received honors in general education in sociology and psychology, was the president of Students for Women's Issues and a member of the Honors Student Association, Sociology Club and Alpha Kappa Delta, the sociology honors society. She plans to become a marriage and family therapist. A graduate of Clear Spring High School, she is the daughter of Bob and Becky Slate.

Adrienne Marie Tracey of Smithsburg, who received honors in general education in early childhood/elementary education, was a member of the Frostburg Student Education Association, National Residence Hall Honorary and Residence Hall Association. A graduate of Smithsburg High School, she is the daughter of Kathy and Rick Tracey.
