CHARLESTON, WV (05/02/2012)(readMedia)-- University of Charleston freshman ace Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) and leading hitter Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) were named First Team All-WVIAC selections to lead a group of five Golden Eagle softball players to garner conference honors, Tuesday afternoon.
Fultz had a standout campaign in the circle for UC leading to her taking WVIAC Freshman of the Year honors. She recorded 20 wins on the season while throwing three shutouts. She also came in to register two saves during her rookie effort. Fultz worked 188.2 innings on the year, while striking out 212 batters to lead the WVIAC and walked just 39. For the season, Fultz appeared in 35 games, starting 28. She also registered 21 complete games en route to tallying an ERA of 2.23. It marks the first time a UC student-athlete has been named Freshman of the Year in softball.
Vazquez torched opposing pitchers all season to the tune of a .470 batting average to lead the team, despite missing 13 games early in the season she managed 117 at-bats for her junior campaign. Vazquez was second on the team with five homeruns and 33 runs batted in, while pacing the Golden Eagles with 85 total bases on the year. Her 11 doubles was tied for the tops on the squad with Second Team selection Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA).
Tretick makes her second-consecutive appearance as Charleston's sole Second Team selection. She was one of just three (all earned WVIAC honors) to start in all 50 games for the Golden Eagles collecting a .302 batting average with four homeruns and 26 RBI.
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) also grabs her second-straight WVIAC honor as an Honorable Mention selection and joins Tretick as the only other UC player to start all 50 games. Wallace booked a .301 batting average during the 34-16 effort, while stealing 10 bases. Freshman Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) wrapped up the award selections landing an Honorable Mention nod for her rookie season that saw her lead Charleston with seven homeruns as she split time behind the plate and as the designated player.
