ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (03/01/2012)(readMedia)-- Flagler College professors Douglas and Catherine McFarland recently presented papers at the Arizona State University Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies, a large yearly conference in Tempe that attracts scholars in history, literature, music and the visual arts.

Catherine McFarland, who teaches Art History at Flagler College, gave a paper on Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Salvation and the Fall of Icarus at the conference, which took place from Feb. 16-18. The paper was selected for consideration for publication in the Arizona State Medieval and Renaissance Studies journal.

Her husband, Douglas McFarland, who teaches courses in English and Liberal Studies and serves as Director of General Education, gave a paper on Statius and Spenser's "The Faerie Queene."

"We like to go and be part of a community of scholars," said Catherine McFarland. "We have friends from other colleges who attend so we like to see them and talk about ideas and topics that we are pursuing."

Located on the campus of Arizona State University, ACMRS is charged with coordinating and stimulating the interdisciplinary exploration of Medieval and Renaissance culture. Its activities cover a period roughly from 400 C.E., the fall of the Roman Empire, to 1700 C.E.
