Flagler College student participates in Liberty Mutual community outreach project

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (01/26/2012)(readMedia)-- Flagler College junior Estefania Mones was one of 10 college students selected to join the Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars Community Project team in Los Angeles earlier this month to help the Angeles National Forest Rangers with ongoing recovery efforts stemming from recent natural disasters.

"Liberty Mutual's Community Project 2012 was truly a remarkable experience," said Mones, a business administration major. "It was a week that I will never forget and I am honored to have been able to spend a week with this remarkable group of people planting trees and creating positive change in the Angeles National Forest."

From Jan. 2-8, students continued the project's work on reforestation of the Angeles National Forest by planting new saplings and erecting protective tents around them as well as putting in place ground protection that aids growth. The students also helped the rangers with clean up from the recent Santa Ana windstorms, which caused nearly $4.0 million in damage to Department of Public Works properties.

"Making a difference, whether through volunteering on-campus or in the local community, is a key concern for college students," said Lane Garnett, University Relations Program Manager for Liberty Mutual Group. "The Community Project gives students an opportunity to reach beyond their usual sphere of involvement to help people in a section of the country that unfortunately has experienced several natural disasters."

In addition to Flagler, the other Community Project recipients hail from Bentley University, Bryant University, Howard University, Middle Tennessee State University, Northeastern University, San Francisco State University, University of Michigan and University of New Hampshire.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college located in St. Augustine, Fla.
