Flagler Presents Lecture on Religion and Southern History

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (02/01/2011)(readMedia)-- The Flagler College Community Lecture Series continues on Tuesday, Feb. 15, with a lecture by Dr. Michael Butler, assistant professor in the Liberal Studies Department, on "The 'Christ-Haunted' South: Religion as History in Dixie."

The lecture series features speakers who have unique perspectives on religious and cultural issues.

Author of "Victory After the Fall: The Memories of Civil Rights Activist H. K. Matthews," Butler has been published in the Journal of Southern History, the Florida Historical Quarterly, Southern Cultures, Popular Music and Society, and the Journal of Mississippi History. He has also written more than 40 book reviews and encyclopedia entries for various academic journals.

Butler graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in history from Spring Hill College, a Jesuit college in Mobile, Ala., where he was a President's Scholar. He received both his master's and doctorate in history from the University of Mississippi, where he specialized in 20th century Southern history with an emphasis on the Civil Rights movement.

The Flagler College Community Lecture Series was established in 2007 to present the St. Augustine community with select topics from Flagler faculty and local experts.

Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for four lectures. The entire series costs $30. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King St. Reservations are required, but space is limited. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.
