Forage for Fall Mushrooms with an Expert

Paul Smith's College to Hold a Mushroom Hunt, Lecture on Oct. 15

PAUL SMITHS, NY (10/07/2011)(readMedia)-- Join mycology expert Susan Hopkins on Saturday, Oct. 15, on a hunt for edible and medicinal mushrooms on the Red Dot Trail in Paul Smiths at 2 p.m. A lecture by professional mycologist Tina Ellor, "The Growing Green Business of Mushrooms: Composting, Cultivation, and Culinary Versatility," will follow at 7 p.m.

Ellor is technical director of Phillips Mushroom Farm in Kennett Square, Pa. Phillips is the largest producer, packer and shipper of specialty mushrooms in North America. She currently serves on the National Organic Standards Board, the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) board of directors, and the Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee of the Leonardo Institute.

Hopkins, who lives in the Saranac Lake area, is a member of several professional organizations including the North American Mycological Association and the Northeastern Mycological Federation. She has been the featured guest speaker at numerous seminars, lectures and workshops throughout the country. An expert in the field, she has attended international symposiums in Scotland, Sweden, Finland, Australia, the United States and Denmark. Additionally, she is also co-advisor to the college's Adirondack Mycology Club.

WHAT:

Mushroom hunt with Susan Hopkins and lecture with Tina Ellor. The foray, from 2-4 p.m., will meet at the lean-to across from the college's entrance on Route 30; the lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in the Pine Room of the Joan Weill Student Center. Free and open to the public.
