POTSDAM, NY (09/12/2011)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam Women's Hockey Head Coach Jay Green has named former team captain Courtney Laughlin as an assistant coach for the 2011-12 season.

Laughlin, a four-year member of the Bears women's hockey team, has been with the program since it's reinstatement as a club team in 2007-08. She served as an assistant captain as a freshman and a captain the rest of her career at Potsdam. Each year Laughlin's teammates selected her as the team's Leadership Award winner.

"Courtney joins our coaching staff following an admirable athletic and academic career," Green said. " As a player, Courtney set an example as a committed athlete both on and off the ice. Laughlin was successful in the classroom as well. She was a member of the Honors Society, the National Leadership Organization, and was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in each of her final three years.

As a freshman, Laughlin helped guide her team to a Northeast Women's Collegiate Hockey Association Championship. During her junior season, the Bears clinched their first postseason game since joining the ECAC West Conference in 2008. Last year, Laughlin captained Potsdam to a school record 10 wins.

"She has played a very important role in the growth of our program" states Coach Green. With her experience as a student-athlete here at Potsdam, she will prove to be a great ambassador as we continue to develop Bears women's hockey."

Laughlin, a Gambrills, Md. native, graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in professional writing and communications.
