BATAVIA, NY (01/27/2017)(readMedia)-- In a continuing effort to make an impact and improve the local community, several residents of College Village, the residence life community of Genesee Community College, spent a day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Genesee County. Their assistance in the renovation of a house located at 1299 Bloomindale Road in Basom, New York was largely in the basement of the home preparing for the installment of new wiring and utilities.

The College Village residents spent last Saturday, January 21, 2017 working to restore the home in an effort to keep the cost of homes more affordable for families in the area. Volunteers from the College included Hibari Nozaki (Osaka, Japan), Angela Ormund (Falconer, New York), Olubunmi Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria), Khalifa Niasse (Bronx, New York), and Misaki Kasai (Aichi, Japan).

"Not only do our student residents enjoy getting out into the community and working together for a greater cause, but this kind of service learning opportunity often leads to life-long friendships," Mary-Clare Stokes, assistant director- residence life and learning said. "It is a win-win-win scenario all the way around."

Habitat for Humanity of Genesee County is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The organization works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, durable housing. The houses are then sold to partner families at no profit through affordable mortgages.
