GCC Photography & Arts Professor's Installation in Rochester

Messin' Captures the Splendor of Nature from a Boat on the Water

BATAVIA, NY (03/28/2018) Genesee Community College is excited to announce an art installation by GCC's own Assistant Professor of Photography and Art Joseph L. Ziolkowski. The installation, Messin', is the result of ten seasons spent aboard a 16 foot long StarCraft boat built in 1973. The mixed media exhibit includes pinhole images, digital panoramas, and a curated digital video loop, all of which depict the passage of time both conceptually and literally.

Messin' will be displayed at the Colleen Buzzard Studio, (#401 above the Good Luck Restaurant) at 250 North Goodman Street in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts from April 6, 2018 through April 27, 2018 with three artist receptions on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 6 p.m. and on two Saturdays, April 14 and 21, from noon to 4 p.m.. The exhibit can also be viewed by special appointment by contacting buzzardcolleen@gmail.com.

The artist's statement, written by Kasey Edgerton, describes the moments captured in the exhibit.

"Messin' about, one encounters childhood anew, a moment of arrested innocence, bathed in a golden eternal sunshine. Time at once exists, but seems to recede away. It is the cessation of all 'have to do,' and temporarily creates the transitory realm of 'want to do.' In this removed space, we are allowed to fully indulge in the beauty of fleeting moments. In an instant such as this it feels as if neither wickedness nor sorrow could exist in the world, only the great sublimity of nature, as we meander along. The act of boating occupies a narrow band of bliss between too little and too much wind, between dead calms and dizzying storms. Both this unknowable variability and inherent risks are crucial parts of the appeal, as true pleasures, in all of their bittersweet poignancy, are never that simple in the demands they make of us."
