BATAVIA, NY (12/19/2018) For lots of people, the New Year brings with it a list of resolutions. With the start of 2019 on the horizon, Dr. Thomas C. Priester, Genesee Community College's associate vice president for student success, reminds the community that education is the best New Year's resolution of all, and it is the "resolution worth sticking to!" To make the most of the New Year, Dr. Priester announced additional hours at the College's Student Success Center.
During the month of December, the Student Success Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., following the College's holiday schedule. GCC will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 24 and 25, as well as December 31 and January 1, 2019.
To assist as many students as possible, GCC's Student Success Center has extended hours of operation in January. The hours on Monday, January 7 through Thursday, January 10 and again on Monday, January 14 through Thursday January 17, 2019 will be from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. In addition, the Student Success Center will also be open on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. Appointments are encouraged, however, walk-ins are always welcome.
"Although many people may think the fall semester is best time to begin a college experience, there will be many students starting at GCC in January for our spring semester. Meeting with a Student Success Coach at the Student Success Center to develop an academic success map (from start to finish) is critical to ensure students meet their academic and career goals," Dr. Priester said. "In addition, should one of our campus centers in Albion, Arcade, Dansville, Lima, Medina, or Warsaw be close to home, our team members there are ready to assist!" More information about upcoming registration events and our Student Success Directory can be found online at www.genesee.edu/ssc.
In fact, the Spring 2019 semester at GCC has more than 88 introductory classes available in an array of subject matter from accounting to microbiology, mass communication to broadcasting, creative problem solving to corrections. The complete Spring 2019 Semester course schedule is available online at https://www.genesee.edu/courses/schedule/. With the first of three Spring 2019 sessions starting on Monday, January 14, 2019, the time to enroll is now!
There are classes at all seven campus locations as well as online, including Beginning Personal Fitness (PED259) which can be completed 100% online and will fulfill an elective requirement in almost all majors. Students in this class learn fitness theory, basic fitness training and conditioning techniques while working toward specific individual fitness goals. This course also emphasizes basic conditioning routines, proper use of free weights and exercise machines. Students can use GCC's new state-of-the-art fitness facility in the Richard C. Call Arena (or another specialized training facility) and develop a variety of information resources to gain personal knowledge in appropriate fitness conditioning strategies.
Another popular online course for students, including those currently working in a number of different careers is Interpreting Engineer Drawings (EGR117). This class focuses on different methods of drawing, size and shape descriptions, industrial terminology, abbreviations and symbol identification, and visualization skills necessary to interpret production drawings - perfect for employees in the design, manufacturing or product development industry.
"With all there is to do as we prepare for 2019, registering for the Spring Semester should be near the top of the list. So, while folks are considering resolutions to ring in the New Year, we hope they will give us a ring -or an email- to get started on their educational journey," Priester added. "We are ready to help."
