GCC's Spring Semester Offers New Courses and Tried and True Career Options

BATAVIA, NY (11/10/2014)(readMedia)-- From web design to a Spanish course for health professionals, GCC is ready to help students of all ages start the year off with new knowledge and career readiness. Register now for the spring semester! Classes begin Monday, January 12, 2015.

Healthcare professionals encounter a variety of patients daily. An increasing number of these patients may speak only Spanish. GCC is ready to help with a new Spanish course (SPA 111), Introduction to Spanish for Health Professionals. The course will help students interact effectively at the novice level with native Spanish speakers including cross-cultural communication. No previous Spanish education is required, though some prior experience is helpful.

The class will emphasize oral communicative Spanish language skills for health care workers in professions such as nursing, physical therapy assistant, respiratory care, sleep technology, veterinary technology and other fields that involve patient care. "We will provide instruction based on the needs of the student," said Kathy Kimber, GCC professor of Spanish.

In addition to the Spanish for Health Professionals, GCC will also offer two of its new Food Processing Technology courses this spring. Both FPT101 and 102 are scheduled from 4 - 6:45 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, respectively, to better accommodate currently employed students. These courses are perfect for food technicians to advance their careers and explore specialty areas such as food safety, food storage and packaging, quality assurance, plant operations and other positions.

Job opportunity predictions in computer and information technology continue to be "faster than average" through 2022. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook cites 17% growth in computer support specialists and a whopping 37% growth for information security analysts. GCC has nine degrees and certificates providing an excellent starting point for lifelong career success in information technology. Additionally, this spring GCC has 11 different sessions at different times for Intro to Computers (CIS102), as well as many other entry level courses in Web Publishing, Microcomputer Applications, Systems Analysis and Design and Introduction to Operating Systems.

For those already in the field seeking to advance their career or for returning Info Tech students, GCC's has numerous higher level courses such as Implementation (CIS 204) that builds on Web Publishing (CIS 113) moving students into large-scale site development and introducing advanced web technologies. The course focuses on site design issues, including scalability, maintenance, and integration of web technologies into the business or organizational context, utilizing Perl, cascading style sheets (CSS), dynamic HTML, basic JavaScript and streaming media.

Computer Programming 2 (CIS 221) continues what students learned in Computer Programming 1 (CIS 219). The course focuses on program development, program testing and documentation, functions, files, advanced data structures, pointers, stacks, queues, linked lists, recursion, trees, sorting, searching and object-oriented concepts. The class will be offered via the 360° Learning Option, which allows students to access the lessons at a time and place convenient to them via videoconferencing service WebEx.

As new manufacturing jobs come to the area, GCC's Engineering Blueprint Reading (EGR 117) provides an ideal introduction to the different methods of drawing, size and shape descriptions, industrial terms, symbol identification, abbreviations and visualization skills. The online course provides a perfect foundation to understand dimensional drawings, and requires no prerequisites.

No matter what industry or field, regardless of age and educational background, and irrespective of geography due to GCC's many online courses and seven campus locations-this spring semester is the time to enroll in a course at GCC.
