DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Louise Piper of Garner won First Place Overall in the C & H Canned Jams competition, judged on August 8 prior to the start of the 2018 Iowa State Fair.
Rod Zeitler of Iowa City claimed Second Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes Award. Gale Butler of Des Moines earned Third Place Overall.
Tanya K. Hardy of Osceola won the Sweepstakes prize.
Jams are a thick spread made with crushed or chopped fruit cooked with sugar. Jam has the same brilliance and color as jelly, but is softer in texture.
Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
