ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/30/2013)(readMedia)-- When Flagler College decided to launch the 125th anniversary celebration of the Hotel Ponce de Leon, the College decided it wanted its promotional materials to be reminiscent of the styles of the late 19th century.

That's where Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Luciana Gassett came in.

Gassett will speak on Oct. 15 as part of the Community Lecture Series and will discuss the process of designing the art of the 125th anniversary celebration as well as the Artistic Printing movement that flourished in the late-nineteenth century.

"I really wanted to tell the history of the Hotel Ponce de Leon while being true to the historical moment in graphic design that flourished during its glory," said Gassett. "I worked this project as a designer of the period – using the architectural elements as inspiration, the colors used by artistic printers of the time for the color scheme and the typefaces of the time."

As to the movement, Gassett explained that with the growth of manufacturing, new modes of transportation, and rapidly expanding trade, new forms of printed material were required. The Artistic printers of the 1870's and 1880's worked with a freedom that would not be matched until the formal and typographic experimentation of the early twentieth-century avant-garde.

Professor Gassett earned her M.A. in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design with a specialty in brand positioning and brand revitalization. She earned a B.A. in Visual Communication from Universidade de Brasilia, Brazil. She brings a successful career in marketing and graphic design to her teaching role at Flagler College, and her work has been honored with national and international industry recognition.

In honor of the 125th anniversary of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, the 2013 Community Lecture Series has focused on "The Hotel Ponce de Leon Deconstructed: Building the Future for Modern America."

The series features a lineup of historians and scholars discussing Henry Flagler's vision for St. Augustine, social classes and American politics during the late 19th century, and the influence of art, music and literature during the Gilded Age.

Tickets to the lecture are $5 per person. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King St. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.

This year, thanks to VISIT FLORIDA's Cultural Heritage and Nature Tourism Grant Program, Flagler College is offering complimentary admission to the fall 2013 Flagler College Community Lecture Series for any St. Johns County tourism employee. Tourism employees interested in attending the lecture will need to present their employee name tag or ID at the lecture series registration table.
