Gavin Named Regional and Conference Coach of the Year

BATAVIA, NY (11/02/2015)(readMedia)-- Genesee Community College men's soccer head coach Ken Gavin was recently named the Region III Division III Coach of the Year. The announcement was made at the Region III Men's Soccer Championships Finals at Herkimer College on Saturday.

Gavin led the Cougars to an unbeaten regular season and the country's No. 1 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Poll. Genesee, currently ranked No. 1, has held the top spot since Oct. 6. Gavin also surpassed 100 career victories at the College with a win against SUNY Adirondack on Oct. 5.

As a team, Genesee broke the single season goals record for the NJCAA and now holds the mark with 139 goals (previous record was 134). The Cougars average 7.3 goals per game, the highest average in the country.

GCC is currently 19-0, which is the school record for most wins in a single season (previously 17). The Cougars captured their second regional title in school history and have advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament, also a second for the program. Genesee advanced to the national title game in its only other national's appearance in 2011. The national tournament will run from Nov. 12-15 at host site Herkimer College.

Gavin was also named the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) Coach of the Year for 2015. The Cougars were 3-0 in conference play and won the WYNAC regular season title for the fifth consecutive season.
