BATAVIA, NY (04/20/2010)(readMedia)-- The generosity of Genesee Community College employees and students is evident with the success of the 2010 Genesee Community College United Way Campaign. The campaign raised $18,088, well surpassing their $17,000 goal. The goal was met with the generosity from130 donors and was the highest amount Genesee employees and students have raised to date. Over the last decade, Genesee employees and students have contributed over $120,000 to the United Way.
The Genesee Community College United Way Committee was led by associate vice president of Human Resources, Gina Weaver. "I am humbled by the generosity and caring that goes on here at GCC," Weaver said. "Together we changed lives and helped address many of our region's most complex issues. Genesee Community College is truly committed to making long-lasting changes in our community."
Through a series of presentations at departmental meetings, the College faculty and staff learned about the wide array of local service agencies-many of which serve the College's students and employees-that receive essential support from the United Way. But, employee contributions were not the only means of support.
The second annual United Way Ducky Derby, sponsored by the GCC Business Forum students, was held Thursday, March 11 in the College's Olympic-sized pool. The students surpassed their goal of raising more funds than last year, selling 466 ducks for a grand total of $1,065 in ducky donations. Last year, the Ducky Derby earned $862. Students raised the funds by selling numbered rubber ducks. The ducks then were set free in the pool at the Batavia Campus. With the help of a 'current' created by members of the College's Swim Team, the first duck that made it to the end of the pool won the race to the hooting, hollering and cheers of a captive fan base of staff, students and faculty.
