Genesee Community College Fashion Student Finds Calling in Front of Camera
BATAVIA, NY (04/21/2010)(readMedia)-- Courtney Jones, a second year Fashion Merchandising student at Genesee Community College has always had a knack for the unconventional. The Fashion major will soon be featured on WKBW Channel 7 news as a guest reporter for the annual student-produced Fashion Show at the College scheduled this Saturday, April 24 with two shows at 3:00 and 7:00PM. This is the second year that Courtney will be reporting from behind the scenes for the runway show. She has enjoyed it so much she has decided to continue her education, not in fashion, but in journalism and broadcasting and she'll be doing it half a world away in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
Courtney, originally from Pike, NY is 20 years old and is anticipating her graduation from Genesee next month. After graduation, she will have only a few short months to prepare to travel to Hawai'I where she'll be attending Hawai'i Pacific University. She was awarded the Ho'omau Scholarship for her outstanding achievements at Genesee and plans on studying Journalism to one day report from the 'red carpet.'
"I really found my calling after doing the behind the scenes reporting for the Fashion Show," Courtney said. "I really wanted to do something different than everyone else in the Fashion program. Everyone heads off to New York City or California, after graduation and I wanted to do something unlike everyone else."
Courtney is both nervous and excited to be traveling and living in Hawai'i. She is excited to meet new people and learn in a different environment. Due to the high cost of travel, she will be staying in Hawai'i all year and will only travel home for the summer. For the next two years she will be living in an apartment overlooking Waikiki beach.
"I'm looking forward to studying for a class under a palm tree on the beach," Courtney added.
Courtney is a 2007 graduate of Letchworth Central School. She enjoys many athletic activities including wrestling, volleyball and softball. She is employed at Fashion Bug in Geneseo, NY where she coordinates their twice-yearly fashion shows in the store. She is also an independent Jewelry Advisor for Lia Sophia Jewelry. She is the daughter of Ron Jones and Lisa Arnold and she has one brother, Colby and one sister, Casey. She resides in Gainesville, NY with her father.
"My goal in the future is to travel all around the world. With the career I'm choosing, I can cover stories and events that are hosted in different states and countries," Courtney said. "For now, I don't plan on settling in one spot but to expand my studies worldwide."
