Genesee Community College and Genesee Valley Educational Partnership Pilot Sports Science Academy in Mt. Morris
BATAVIA, NY (04/26/2018) Genesee Community College and the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership (GVEP) began accepting applications last month to a new program being piloted at the GVEP Mt. Morris campus. The program is part of the College's Accelerated College Enrollment (ACE) Program.
The Sports Science Academy is a one-year partnership program designed to provide highly motivated high school seniors with an opportunity for hands-on exploration of the world of Sports Science. The academy combines secondary education with collegiate education to allow students to earn 14 college credits prior to high school graduation jump starting a college degree program in Sports Science. To apply to the Sports Science Academy, contact ACE Programs Career Pathways Project Director Deborah Dunlevy at (585) 343- 0055 ext. 6316 or via email at dkdunlevy@gensee.edu.
"The Career Pathways Academy programs have proven time and again to effectively prepare students for the higher education and real world career options they need to achieve their career aspirations," says Dunlevy. "They are exposed to the realities of working in their field and develop a foundation for their futures."
Through the Sports Science Academy, students receive a substantial tuition discount and pay only $55 per credit hour, which is roughly one-third of GCC's regular tuition rate for the same courses! Also, as a GCC enrolled student, these individuals will have GCC ID access to the College's facilities including computer labs, athletic facilities, library resources and databases as well as a GCC email account to communicate with professors and fellow students. In addition, these students participate in job shadow and internship opportunities that put them in the field and provide a working knowledge and application of their classroom learning.
Over the course of one academic year, Sports Science Academy students will take six college courses for a total of 14 college credits; Responding to Emergencies (HED205), Health Sciences Related to Coaching (HED209), Body Conditioning (PED171), Weight Training (PED172), Introduction to Sports Management (PED251) and Athletic Training (PED255). These courses provide a foundation for a number of two and four-year degree programs and many professional careers ranging from Athletic Trainers and Physical Education Instructors to Sportscasters and Sports Television Talent Directors, Sports Team or Stadium Managers, Cruise Ship Activities Directors and so many more!
