POTSDAM, NY (05/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The Roland Gibson Art Gallery at SUNY Potsdam will showcase works by gifted area high school students at its upcoming exhibition. The 2011 St. Lawrence County Annual High School Art Show will feature work submitted by 16 high school art teachers from 10 county districts.

"SUNY Potsdam is honored to recognize budding young artistic talents. The Gibson Gallery is dedicated to helping artists of all ages to grow and develop their vision," said gallery Director April Vasher-Dean. "We make it our mission to bring the arts to the North Country community."

The exhibition will be on display from June 1 to June 17, from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. There will be a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 in the Gibson Gallery to open the show, with prizes being presented at 5:30 p.m.

Five awards will be given at the reception to recognize select pieces, including the SUNY Potsdam Art Department Award of Excellence, as well as awards for photography, 3-D works, painting and works on paper. Those awards are supported by the SUNY Potsdam Department of Art, the Gibson Gallery, Bernie and Jane Lammer and Argent's Jewelry.

The juror for the awards is Nate Infante, art studio technician and visual resource manager for the art department at SUNY Potsdam.

The Gibson Gallery is the art museum at SUNY Potsdam and serves as the center for visual arts at the College through the collection, exhibition and interpretation of quality works of art. The museum's collection includes significant works from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as earlier pieces. The Gibson Gallery's mission is to make direct experience of the visual arts accessible to students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as to residents of Northern New York.

Admission to the Gibson Gallery, located at Brainerd Hall, is free, and the museum is handicapped-accessible. The art museum is open to the public from noon until 5 p.m. on Monday and Friday, from noon until 7 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, and from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
